The Lattice Dwarf Cichlid (Nannacara taenia) is a small, unassuming fish from the waters near Belém in the Para state of Brazil. It rarely turns heads at first glance, its coloration runs toward muted browns and subtle patterning rather than anything flashy, but that modest appearance is part of what makes it interesting to keepers who look beyond the surface. Reaching only about an inch or two at adulthood, it fits comfortably into smaller setups and carries a genuinely peaceful temperament, making it a reasonable choice for hobbyists who are newer to cichlids. That said, this species is notably shy, and it really comes into its own when kept with calm, similarly sized tankmates like small tetras, corydoras, or peaceful barbs. You're unlikely to spot it in your average fish store. Most keepers track it down through specialist cichlid dealers or fellow enthusiasts. Breeding is where things get genuinely engaging. Pairs spawn in caves or inverted pots, after which the female takes over egg-guarding duties inside the shelter while the male patrols the surrounding space. Getting them comfortable enough to breed usually takes a dedicated tank and a good run of live foods to bring them into condition. It's a modest-looking fish with more depth than its drab reputation suggests.
