Found in the rivers of Sabah, Borneo, this small cyprinid, Nematabramis everetti, is one of those modest-looking fish that rewards a closer look. Its most immediately obvious feature is a pair of barbels that extend well past the head, reaching at least to the midpoint of the pectoral fins. Unusually long even within its own genus. Alongside that, a dark, vertically elongated marking sits just behind the gill cover on the shoulder, far more prominent than in any of its close relatives. The body is fairly deep for a fish of this size, giving it a slightly chunky profile compared to slimmer stream cyprinids. In the wild, adults gravitate toward deeper, calmer river sections, while younger fish occupy riffles and cut-off pools. A nice reminder that a single species can use quite different microhabitats across its life stages. Spawning is thought to occur in warm shallows. In the aquarium, this is a manageable species for beginners, and its modest adult size means it fits comfortably into a community setup without demanding an oversized tank. A river-style aquascape with some current variation would reflect its natural habitat well and likely keep it at its best.
