The Orange Poso Rabbit Snail (Tylomelania gemmifera) is one of those snails that stops people in their tracks at the fish store. Not because it looks like a typical pond snail, but because it looks almost alien. It has a long, tapered spiral shell and a wrinkled, often brightly colored body that gives it a vaguely rabbit-like face, hence the name. Color forms vary, with body tones ranging from orange to yellow depending on the individual, and the shell itself tends toward dark brown or black with a textured surface. In the wild, this species comes from the ancient lakes of the Sulawesi region in Indonesia, which are known for their unusual and highly specialized fauna. In the aquarium, Rabbit Snails are slow, deliberate grazers that spend their time methodically working across substrate and hardscape, browsing on biofilm, soft algae, and decaying plant matter. They are peaceful with fish and other invertebrates and won't bother healthy plants, making them genuinely useful tank members rather than just novelties. Unlike many snails, they reproduce slowly and give birth to single live young, so population explosions are not a concern. A reasonable choice for beginners who want something a little different.
