Mekong Ricefish (Oryzias mekongensis) is a small, peaceful species native to the shallow ditches, canals, and ponds of the Mekong basin, where it threads through dense growths of fine-leaved aquatic plants feeding on plankton. Males are the more visually distinctive of the two sexes, sporting bright orange-red bands along the edges of the caudal fin, which itself has a rounded, somewhat elongated shape that sets this species apart from close relatives. Despite the occasional trade name 'Mekong redfin lampeye killifish', it belongs to the ricefish family Adrianichthyidae rather than any killifish lineage. A distinction worth knowing when researching care. One source flags it as difficult to maintain, so while the care level may suit beginners in principle, it rewards those who pay attention to water quality and tank setup. Its small adult size means community tank choices need careful thought. Nano fish like Boraras or Danionella and small freshwater shrimp are far better companions than anything boisterous or large. A group of eight or more will show natural behavior and noticeably more confidence. Breeding is one of this species' genuine highlights: females can deposit clutches of adhesive eggs almost daily when well-conditioned, and the whole process is manageable for anyone with a densely planted tank and a little patience with the fry.
