About

Found in Lake Poso in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, Oryzias sarasinorum is one of the rarest ricefishes both in the wild and in the aquarium hobby, making every captive group genuinely worth cherishing. Sometimes called Sarasin's minnow, it carries a broad, silvery lateral stripe running from just behind the head to the base of the tail, and has an unusually high scale count that sets it apart from virtually all other members of its genus. What really makes this fish remarkable, though, is how it reproduces. Rather than scattering eggs and moving on, females carry a small cluster of eggs between their elongated pelvic fins, with each egg tethered to the body by a bundle of fine filaments. A strategy called pelvic brooding that's rare even among the ricefishes. Spawning usually happens in the early morning, with males darkening noticeably and displaying in a head-down posture toward females. Because the species is so uncommon in captivity, keeping a group of six or more and focusing on captive breeding is strongly encouraged. Dense, fine-leaved plantings help protect free-swimming fry from being eaten by the adults. Its peaceful nature and beginner-friendly care make it accessible to anyone willing to treat it as the conservation priority it genuinely is.
