Found along the rocky reefs and exposed outcroppings of the Eastern South Pacific, Pacifigorgia dampieri is a gorgonian sea fan that brings genuine wild character to a reef system. Like most members of its genus, it grows in a flattened, branching colony that orients itself perpendicular to the current, maximizing the surface area available for filter feeding. That growth habit is also your main clue about what this animal needs in the aquarium: consistent, vigorous flow is not optional. Without it, the colony struggles to capture the suspended particulates and zooplankton it depends on, and tissue recession tends to follow. This is not a coral for a calm, low-energy tank setup. Eastern Pacific gorgonians are often azooxanthellate or only weakly photosynthetic, meaning they rely heavily on regular target feeding rather than light alone, so be prepared to supplement with appropriately sized particulate foods on a routine basis. Moderate lighting suits it well, and it is considered reef safe with typical invertebrate tankmates. Given its feeding demands and need for precise flow placement, this species sits comfortably in the intermediate care category. Rewarding for keepers who have moved past the basics and are ready to meet its more specific requirements.
