The Indian glass perch (Parambassis ranga) is one of those fish that stops newcomers in their tracks. Its body is so transparent that you can clearly see the skeleton, internal organs, and even the beating heart. Previously sold under the name Chanda ranga, this small perch hails from sluggish rivers, ponds, and seasonal floodplains across South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan through to Thailand and Malaysia. It thrives in freshwater despite a persistent and incorrect myth that it requires brackish conditions. That myth likely grew from confusion with the infamous "painted" or "disco" glass fish, which were injected with artificial dyes on Asian fish farms. A cruel practice that left fish disease-prone and short-lived. Healthy, unpainted specimens are considerably more resilient. In the aquarium, the Indian glass perch is a shoaling species and genuinely needs company. A group of six or more will behave far more confidently than a smaller cluster. It feeds on invertebrates, worms, and small crustaceans in the wild, and it appreciates meaty foods in captivity. Males show some territorial posturing during spawning but rarely cause real harm. Good tankmates include barbs, smaller loaches, and similarly sized peaceful species. The fry are notoriously tricky to raise, so breeding is best approached with some experience behind you.
