Cascudo Pit Bull (Parotocinclus jumbo) is a small, stocky loricariid from northeastern Brazil, native to the Paraíba do Norte, Piranhas, and Canhotinho river systems, as well as a tributary of the Mundaú River near Maceió in Alagoas State. In the wild it favors shallow, clear-water stretches with minimal current, hanging around sandy and rocky substrates where it can graze and rest. That same behavior carries right into the aquarium. This fish will spend much of the day tucked into shaded spots on the bottom, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's dull. For its size, it's surprisingly active, especially once the lights go down and its nighttime feeding kicks in. One of the more interesting things about this species is its ability to survive in water with low dissolved oxygen. Like some other bottom-dwellers, it can gulp air at the surface and extract oxygen through a modified portion of its digestive tract, which gives it a degree of resilience not all small plecos share. It's herbivorous, so keeping algae available or supplementing with plant-based foods is important. While not overly demanding, it rewards keepers who pay attention to water quality and tank layout, making it a solid choice for someone moving beyond beginner-level fishkeeping.
