The Black Fin Barb (Pethia nigripinnis) is a small, seldom-encountered cyprinid from a narrow range in southern India, native to the Moyar River drainage in the Nilgiris and the Kalindi Stream in the Wayanad region of the Western Ghats. Adult males are immediately identifiable by their almost entirely black fins, dorsal, anal, pelvic, and pectoral all darkened, combined with a distinct humeral spot and a dark marking that wraps around the caudal peduncle like a band. It's a genuinely compact fish, topping out well under two inches. Despite its beginner care rating, the species presents a practical challenge for community tank keepers: its preference for cooler water puts it out of range for most tropical setups, so it really shines in a species-focused or cool-water biotope arrangement with similarly sized tankmates. It's a shoaling fish rather than a true schooling species, and a social hierarchy will develop among individuals, so giving them plenty of decor to break up sightlines matters more than you might expect with a fish this small. Males rival males produce some genuinely interesting sparring displays and show off better color in mixed-sex groups. This species is essentially absent from the commercial trade and has been kept only by a small number of dedicated private collectors, so acquiring it takes some searching.
