The black ruby barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is a small, lively cyprinid from the forested hill streams of Sri Lanka, found naturally in the Kelani to Nilwala river basins at elevations up to around 300 meters. Wild fish inhabit clear, shaded waterways with gravel or sandy bottoms, and that preference for cooler, well-oxygenated conditions is worth keeping in mind when setting up a tank. Males are the showstoppers here. Their bodies shift toward deep crimson or burgundy, and their fins darken considerably, especially when kept alongside rival males. Females are more subdued with a yellowish-brown base and three distinct dark vertical bars on the flanks, which are actually present in both sexes and help distinguish the species. This is a thoroughly peaceful fish that slots comfortably into a wide range of community setups alongside tetras, livebearers, loaches, and small catfish. Being a schooling species, it really needs to be kept in groups of at least six, ideally more. A larger group reduces skittishness and brings out the best color in males, who respond to the presence of competitors. It places no unusual demands on water chemistry, making it a genuinely forgiving choice for newer fishkeepers. Breeding is achievable in the home aquarium with a little preparation, as the fish scatter eggs freely among fine-leaved plants.
