Found across several major river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, Pethia stoliczkana ranges from the upper Mekong basin through the Salween, Irrawaddy, Meklong, and upper Chao Phraya drainages. This small barb reaches around two inches at most and is occasionally sold under the trade name 'Puntius sp. pearlscale', particularly when collected from the Mandalay region of Myanmar, which tends to produce the most colorful individuals. It is worth knowing that this species has long been confused with the closely related P. ticto in the hobby and in older literature. The two can be told apart by the lateral line, which is complete in this species but incomplete in P. ticto. Color patterns also vary between wild populations, which adds to the identification headaches. In the aquarium, this is a genuinely peaceful fish and a solid candidate for a well-planned community setup. Males display their best colors when competing for females or jostling for rank in the hierarchy, so keeping a mixed-sex group of eight to ten or more makes a real difference to both the visual impact and the natural behavior on show. Companions from similar biotopes, comparably-sized cyprinids, loaches, and benthic species like Crossocheilus or Garra, all work well. Breeding follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of small barbs, with no parental care, and adults will eat their own eggs if given the chance.
