The Firefin Barb (Pethia ticto) is a small, peaceful cyprinid with a wide natural range stretching from Pakistan and India through Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and into Thailand, where it inhabits shallow, slow-moving or still waters over muddy substrates. In the wild it forages close to the bottom, picking off insects, crustaceans, and plankton. This species is frequently confused with its close relative P. padamya in the trade, but the two are easy enough to tell apart once you know what to look for. Male Firefin Barbs lack the reddish-orange body coloration that makes P. padamya so instantly recognizable. Males of this species do show their best colors during social interactions, displaying to rivals and competing for female attention, which makes keeping a larger group genuinely rewarding to watch. A mixed-sex group of eight to ten individuals is ideal, and they pair well with similarly sized open-water cyprinids or with loaches that occupy the lower levels of the tank. Breeding in captivity is straightforward for those willing to put in a little effort. They are egg scatterers with no parental instinct, so separating adults from eggs promptly is key to raising fry. They are a reasonable choice for a fishkeeper with some experience who wants an active, sociable schooling fish for a well-planned community setup.
