The nodding plexaurella (Plexaurella nutans), also called the giant slit-pore sea rod, is a soft coral native to the Western Atlantic, ranging from Caribbean waters up through the coastal zones of the United States and Canada. In the wild it grows at moderate depths, typically anchored to hard substrate where it forms tall, branching colonies that flex and nod with the surrounding currents. A movement that likely inspired its common name. The colony structure tends to be robust and upright, with the characteristic slit-shaped pores along the branches that give the "slit-pore" group their identity. For aquarium purposes, this species is considered accessible to less experienced reef keepers, which is a pleasant surprise given how many gorgonians can be finicky. It does best with moderate water movement and moderate lighting, and it is considered reef safe, so it can share a tank with stony and soft coral neighbors without causing problems. As with most photosynthetic gorgonians, consistency matters more than perfection. Stable conditions and appropriate placement will carry you a long way. It is not a species you see in every tank, so it offers a bit of novelty for hobbyists looking to add vertical structure and natural Caribbean character to a reef display.
