The long-spined tree coral (Plumarella longispina) is a gorgonian-style colonial coral native to the Western North Pacific and the waters of the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone, where it typically grows in deeper, cooler reef environments. Its branching, tree-like growth form creates a lot of physical dimension in the aquarium, and the elongated spines that give this species its common name add a texture you don't often see in more commonly kept corals. In the aquarium, it is considered manageable even for newer reef keepers, which is somewhat unusual for a coral with such a wild, deep-water look. It does well under moderate lighting and appreciates a steady but not aggressive flow. Conditions that suit a broad range of reef setups. It is reef safe, so tankmates and other invertebrates are not at risk from its presence.
