Henle's freshwater stingray (Potamotrygon henlei) is one of the most visually distinctive rays available in the hobby, though it remains genuinely rare and expensive due to export restrictions from Brazil, where wild collection is prohibited under federal environmental law. The species comes from the Tocantins and Araguaia rivers of South America, where it occupies the role of apex bottom predator. Its disc is dark brown to black, scattered with white or yellow spots in patterns that vary considerably between individuals. Some are densely spotted, others carry relatively few markings. Juveniles are a duller mottled brown, the vivid adult coloration developing with age. This is a territorial, aggressive species and a serious predator that will eat smaller tankmates, particularly at night. Despite that, it doesn't tolerate highly aggressive companions either, which narrows the selection considerably. Large, peaceful mid-to-upper-water fish tend to work best. One important practical note: like all Potamotrygon, it carries a venomous spine and should be handled with great care. Nets should never be used. This is genuinely a specialist animal requiring a huge footprint tank and a keeper who has done their research thoroughly. Captive breeding does occur in the hobby, but getting a compatible pair and the patience involved makes it a long-term project.
