The Xingu freshwater stingray (Potamotrygon leopoldi) is one of the most visually arresting fish you can keep in a home aquarium, wearing a jet-black disc peppered with bright white spots that become more vivid and defined as the fish matures. Juveniles start out with a muted, brownish patterning that offers camouflage in the wild, so don't be discouraged if a young specimen looks unimpressive at first. This species is native to the Xingu and Fresco rivers in Brazil, where it spends its days buried in the sand and hunts benthic invertebrates after dark. It is among the more active Potamotrygon species and genuinely needs substantial floor space to roam and sift substrate. Despite being listed as beginner-level in structured care guides, that rating applies more to water chemistry tolerance than to the overall commitment involved. These are large, long-lived animals with a functional venomous sting that demands serious respect during feeding and tank maintenance. A net should never be used to move them. Exports from Brazil are now prohibited under national regulations, so captive-bred fish are the primary source in the trade, and prices reflect that scarcity. A rare variant known as the "eclipse" form, in which the spots appear as rings with dark centers, commands an even higher premium. Compatible tankmates exist but require careful thought, as this ray will eat anything small enough to fit in its mouth.
