The reticulate freshwater stingray (Potamotrygon orbignyi) is one of the more approachable members of its family, reaching a relatively compact size for a freshwater ray and proving reasonably hardy once settled in. It comes from the river systems of South America, turning up across the Amazon and Orinoco basins as well as the drainages of Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana, where it inhabits floodplain lakes, stream swamps, and similar slow or still waters. Its natural diet leans heavily on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and insects, so meaty foods are a must in captivity. The disc pattern can make young fish tricky to tell apart from close relatives, particularly P. humerosa, but the smooth skin texture of P. orbignyi is a reliable distinguishing feature. Despite a relatively peaceful day-to-day temperament, this species is a top predator and will treat smaller tankmates as food, especially after dark. Sensible companions are large, peaceful, and tend to occupy the water column rather than the bottom. Like all potamotrygonids, this ray carries a venomous tail spine, and that fact deserves genuine respect rather than fear. Handling with a solid container rather than a net, and working carefully during maintenance, keeps the risk negligible. For a keeper ready to commit to the space and attention these fish demand, it is a rewarding and long-lived species.
