The marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) is one of the most remarkable invertebrates in the freshwater hobby, and arguably in all of zoology. Every single individual is female, and every one reproduces by parthenogenesis. Meaning eggs develop into offspring without fertilization. The result is that every marbled crayfish is a genetic clone of its mother, making this the only known decapod crustacean to reproduce this way in the wild. The species appeared quite recently, believed to have originated from a single mutation in the pet trade during the 1990s, almost certainly derived from the North American slough crayfish. It has since established feral populations across Europe, Madagascar, and beyond. A testament to just how resilient and prolific these animals are. In the aquarium, that same toughness makes them genuinely beginner-friendly. They are adaptable to a wide range of water conditions, grow to a decent size, and display plenty of personality as they go about rearranging their tank and investigating every corner. The marbled patterning across the carapace gives each animal a distinctive look even if they are all genetically identical. Just be aware that one crayfish can quickly become many, and rehoming or releasing them is environmentally irresponsible given their invasive track record.
