A cichlid where the common name matches its scientific identity, Pseudotropheus saulosi is a compact mbuna from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi in East Africa. What immediately sets this species apart is the dramatic difference in coloration between the sexes: males display vivid yellow and black markings, while females are a solid bright orange. So different that many newcomers assume they are looking at two completely separate species. In the wild, large groups congregate in wave-swept, sediment-free rocky habitat near the top of the reef, where the fish pick and nibble algae and associated organic material from rock surfaces. That herbivorous lifestyle should be reflected in their aquarium diet. Breeding follows the classic mbuna pattern of maternal mouthbrooding, where females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to be released. During this period, which can last a few weeks, females will not eat, so watching their condition is important. Some keepers choose to move holding females to a separate tank to protect both the fry and the mother. Like most mbuna, Pseudotropheus saulosi can be territorial, and success in a community tank generally depends on careful stock selection and giving everyone enough space and visual breaks.
