The Janitor Fish (Pterygoplichthys weberi) is a armored catfish native to the upper Amazon basin, found across river systems in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Including the Rio Marañon, Rio Ucayali, and Rio Caquetá drainages. Like other members of its family, it wears a suit of bony plates from head to tail, and its underslung, sucker-shaped mouth is built for rasping algae and organic matter from hard surfaces. One genuinely interesting biological quirk sets this species apart from many other plecos: it can breathe air directly, a facultative adaptation that helps it survive in the seasonally low-oxygen, shallow waters it naturally inhabits. In the aquarium, that means it handles less-than-perfect water conditions better than some tankmates, though that shouldn't be taken as license to skip maintenance. It's generally a peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that minds its own business, spending most of its time grazing surfaces or wedging into a favorite cave. Juveniles are commonly sold under the "Janitor Fish" name and can look deceptively manageable in the store, but this species grows into a substantial fish that needs real swimming and foraging room. A good candidate for a community setup with larger fish, as long as the tank is mature and well-filtered.
