The lobetoothed piranha (Pygopristis denticulata) sits in an interesting spot in the piranha family. It's generally considered one of the more placid members of the group, yet it still carries the formidable, bite-capable dentition that makes all piranhas worthy of respect. In the wild it's found across a broad stretch of northern South America, from the Orinoco basin and Guiana Shield river systems down into tributaries of the lower Amazon, where it likely feeds on a mix of fish and other animal matter. What sets this species apart anatomically is its multicusped teeth, which look noticeably different from the single-pointed teeth of more notorious relatives. The lobe-like cusps are where both the common and scientific names come from. Despite showing up only rarely in both scientific literature and the hobby, it has a reputation as a manageable piranha for keepers willing to provide serious space. A 100-gallon tank is a real minimum, and like most piranhas it does best when fed with care and handled cautiously. Those teeth can cause genuine injury regardless of temperament. With proper conditions it can live well into its teens, making it a long-term commitment for anyone drawn to the less commonly seen side of the piranha world.
