Rainbow bass (Parachromis dovii) is one of the largest and most predatory cichlids kept in the hobby, and it earns every bit of its reputation. Native to lakes and river valleys across both the Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Central America, ranging from Honduras down through Costa Rica, this fish is built for hunting. In the wild it feeds primarily on other fish, supplemented by crustaceans and the occasional insect, and that instinct carries fully into captivity. Any tankmate that fits in its mouth is a meal, and even fish that seem too large are often tested. Males are particularly hostile toward one another, sometimes to a lethal degree, even in spacious tanks. The species is a committed digger too, rearranging substrate and uprooting anything not bolted down. Despite all of this, dovii are often listed as manageable for keepers new to large aggressive cichlids. Partly because their needs are straightforward and they feed readily. The real barrier is practical: housing a fish that can approach two feet in length demands a serious commitment in tank size and filtration. The payoff is a long-lived, deeply interactive fish with a personality that fills a room.
