The Yellowtail Rasbora (Rasbora tornieri) is a slender, active cyprinid from the lowland waterways of Indochina, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where it tends to cruise right at the water's surface in streams, canals, and floodplain ditches. Its most immediately recognizable feature is a bright caudal fin edged with a broad, dark margin, along with a sharply defined dark lateral stripe running from the gill cover to the tail base. A pattern that helps distinguish it from closely related species in the same complex. This is a fish with a genuinely lively personality, rarely sitting still, and it tends to draw attention in a well-set-up tank simply through its constant movement and confident presence. Despite its active nature, it's a peaceful species that can work well in a community setup, provided tankmates are chosen with care and the fish's adult size, which can reach a meaningful length, is taken into account. Being a schooling species, it really should be kept in groups of six or more; fewer than that and the fish tend to become more skittish, and you lose the natural group dynamics that make this species worthwhile to watch, including the competitive displays males put on for females. In the wild it feeds heavily on insects, so a protein-rich diet suits it well in captivity. Some patience and experience with water quality management will serve keepers well here.
