Red Swamp Crayfish

The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is one of the most recognizable freshwater invertebrates in the hobby, and for good reason. Native to the southern United States, particularly the swamps, ditches, and slow-moving waterways of Louisiana and surrounding states, this species has also been introduced across much of the world, where it often establishes itself with alarming ease. In the aquarium it shows that same tenacity: it is tough, adaptable, and genuinely fascinating to watch. Red swamp crayfish are active and curious, constantly patrolling their territory, rearranging decor, and investigating anything new in the tank. That industrious nature is part of the appeal, but it comes with a caveat. Any plants you care about are at serious risk of being uprooted, shredded, or eaten. Tankmates are also a gamble, since these crayfish will readily grab slow or bottom-dwelling fish given the chance. A species-only setup, or one with fast, upper-level fish, tends to work best. On the upside, they are genuinely forgiving of water quality swings and accept a wide range of foods, making them a reasonable choice for someone new to keeping invertebrates who wants something with real personality.
