Rock Kribensis (Haplochromis sauvagei) is a cichlid from Lake Victoria's littoral zone, where it hugs hard-bottomed areas and exposed sandy beaches close to shore. It's a practical, opportunistic feeder in the wild, making meals out of gastropods, insect larvae, particularly burrowing mayfly nymphs, copepods, and diatoms scraped from the substrate. That varied natural diet translates well to aquarium life, and most individuals will readily accept quality pellets, frozen invertebrates, and the occasional snail if you have them. Adults stay in the 2.5 to 5 inch range, which is modest for a Victorian cichlid, but a 55-gallon minimum is still sensible given the territorial tendencies typical of the group. This species is listed as intermediate in care, largely because Lake Victoria cichlids generally do best when you keep water quality high and maintain a stable, moderately hard and alkaline environment. Conditions that mirror their rift-adjacent home. Like most of its relatives, it can be assertive toward tankmates, so pairing it with similarly sized and tempered fish makes sense. It's not the most commonly seen Victorian in the hobby, which is a bit of a shame. These are active, personable fish with genuine ecological backstory behind them.
