Found in massive open-water aggregations along the rocky slopes of Lake Tanganyika, Cyprichromis leptosoma is one of the few cichlids that genuinely needs to be kept in a school to thrive. In the wild, groups can number in the thousands, and even in the aquarium this species does best in groups of eight or more. Larger numbers reward the keeper with some remarkable behavior: dominant males develop vivid coloration and hold three-dimensional territories in mid-water, tilting head-down to court passing females in a display known as lekking. When spawning succeeds, the female collects the eggs in her mouth and broods them for up to four weeks, releasing relatively large, well-developed fry. The species appears in several geographic color forms, including both blue-tailed and yellow-tailed variants, so it is worth researching which morph you are buying. Different forms should never be mixed in the same tank due to hybridization risk. In terms of temperament, these are genuinely peaceful fish that occupy open water, making them an excellent complement to rock-dwelling Tanganyikans like Julidochromis or Altolamprologus. They also serve as useful dither fish, helping more timid species feel at ease. Not an ideal choice for a first cichlid, but a rewarding one for a keeper ready to think seriously about group dynamics.
