Siamese Badis

A small cave-spawning fish from Thailand, Badis siamensis belongs to the ruber group within the genus Badis and is most reliably told apart from its close relatives by the horizontal rows of dark markings along its flanks. In B. ruber those markings take the form of vertical bars, while B. khwae lacks them almost entirely, making flank patterning a useful first point of identification. Despite being described decades ago, this species has barely made a dent in the hobby and has been exported only in small numbers, so finding it takes some effort. Males are territorial and can be genuinely combative toward one another, so thoughtful tank layout matters. Each male needs his own cave and enough visual barriers to reduce sightlines to rivals. A single pair or one male with a few females works well in a smaller setup. Community tankmates are possible, but they should be peaceful and not large enough to intimidate this rather slow-moving, retiring fish; popular shrimp like Neocaridina and Caridina are at real risk of being eaten. Breeding follows a typical badid pattern: the male courts, guides the female into a cave, then takes over sole care of eggs and fry once spawning is complete, fanning and guarding the clutch with genuine dedication. Fry grow slowly at first and need tiny live foods like microworms before graduating to baby brine shrimp. This one rewards patient, intermediate-level keepers.
