The Danube catfish (Silurus glanis) is a genuinely massive predator native to lowland rivers, backwaters, and well-vegetated lakes across a huge swathe of Europe and Central Asia, from Sweden and Finland in the north down through the Black and Caspian Sea basins and into Turkey. Verified specimens have reached nearly nine feet and well over 200 pounds, making earlier folkloric claims of 16-foot monsters understandable even if exaggerated. This is a bottom-oriented, nocturnal hunter that spends its days largely inactive before becoming an efficient ambush predator after dark, targeting fish and other aquatic vertebrates. Juveniles start out on invertebrates but quickly graduate to larger prey, and anything tankmate-sized is fair game. Despite its reputation, the species tends to be fairly calm and sedentary in aquarium conditions. It's not a frantic or chaotic fish, just an enormous one with an appetite to match. It is territorial with its own kind under most circumstances, though wild adults have been observed forming loose aggregations for reasons that remain unclear. Captive breeding has never been documented, and commercial propagation relies on artificial methods. The honest reality is that this fish belongs on very few fishkeepers' shortlists. Even a 1,000-gallon tank is a tight fit for an adult, and this is ultimately a species for dedicated public aquariums or specialist facilities.
