Sewellia sp. SEW01 is one of the more commonly encountered members of its genus in the hobby, sometimes sold under the informal names 'spotted' or 'special'. It originates from central Vietnam, with confirmed records from Quang Nam province, where it inhabits fast-flowing streams. Like all Sewellia, its body is strongly flattened top-to-bottom, with horizontally spread paired fins and a specialized pelvic structure that together form a powerful suction cup. Letting it cling to rocks in powerful current rather than swim freely. The patterning sets it apart from close relatives: small pale spots scattered across a darker background, rather than the net-like reticulations seen in the similar S. albisuera. Its taxonomic status remains unresolved pending a proper revision using fresh material. In the aquarium, this species is among the most assertive of the hillstream loach group. Males especially will defend prime feeding territories, and the dominance displays, two fish rising belly-to-belly in an almost vertical stance, are genuinely entertaining to watch. Keep a group of six or more to spread that tension around and bring out natural social behavior. It mixes well with small, open-water cyprinids and rheophilic gobies, but tends to outcompete similarly shaped, bottom-dwelling species. Breeding is reportedly achievable even by less experienced keepers, making it one of the more rewarding hillstream species to work with.
