Striped Tucunare

The striped tucunare (Cichla temensis) is one of the largest cichlids on the planet, and that fact alone should be the first thing any prospective keeper considers. Native to the blackwater rivers and lagoons of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, including the Rio Negro, Uatumã, and various Venezuelan and Colombian tributaries, adults in the wild patrol deeper nearshore zones and rocky or sandy river banks in search of prey, primarily smaller characins. The body is heavily built and patterned with a bold series of dark vertical bars and irregular spots that make younger fish look almost painted, though coloration shifts somewhat as they mature. In the aquarium, this species is territorial and will not hesitate to eat anything small enough to fit in its mouth, so tankmates need to be chosen with serious care. Large arowanas, big catfish, stingrays, and other robust cichlids are among the better candidates, but only in a truly enormous setup. This is not a fish that tolerates cramped quarters at any life stage. Peacock bass are frequently sold as small juveniles, which can make the purchase feel manageable, but they grow fast and their long-term needs are demanding. Best suited to experienced keepers with the space and commitment to see the species through to adulthood.
