Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciata alenquer) are widely regarded as the royalty of the freshwater aquarium world, and once you've kept them, it's easy to see why. Native to the slow-moving, blackwater rivers and flooded forests of the Amazon basin in South America, these fish have adapted to warm, soft, and often acidic conditions in the wild. Their body shape is what immediately sets them apart. A laterally compressed, almost perfectly circular disc profile that makes them unlike virtually any other common aquarium fish. The alenquer variant is particularly known for its rich base coloration and the vivid patterning that develops as the fish matures. Adults reach a solid size, giving them genuine visual weight in a display tank. Despite their reputation for being demanding, this subspecies is often listed as manageable for dedicated beginners who are willing to maintain stable, warm water and keep up with regular water changes. They are genuinely peaceful and do well in groups, actually preferring the company of their own kind. Tall, spacious tanks suit them best given their body shape and schooling tendencies. Pair them with calm tankmates and soft, slightly acidic water, and they reward that attention with remarkable behavior and color.
