The glowlight rasbora (Trigonopoma pauciperforatum) is a small, slender cyprinid found across a broad stretch of Southeast Asia, from Thailand and Cambodia down through the Malay Peninsula and into Indonesia. In the wild it inhabits peat swamps, sluggish forest streams, and marshy backwaters shaded by dense canopy, where the water runs dark with tannins and is naturally soft and acidic. Its most recognizable feature is the lateral stripe running along the body, though calling it simply "red" undersells the variability. Depending on where the fish was collected, its diet, and even its current mood, that stripe can shift from a warm copper-orange to a more golden tone. Some individuals also show a secondary, darker stripe below the main one, and older fish tend to develop more pronounced black edging to the scales along the belly. Its carnivorous diet in nature consists mainly of zooplankton and small insects, so varied foods that include live or frozen fare will keep it in the best color. This species is a genuinely peaceful shoaler that does well with other calm Southeast Asian fish of similar size. Small loaches, other rasboras, and appropriate anabantoids all make good neighbors. Boisterous or fast-moving tankmates can edge it out at feeding time, so avoid those pairings. A forgiving choice for newer keepers willing to provide suitably soft water.
