The twoband cichlid (Vieja bifasciata) is a hefty Central American species from the slow-moving lakes, lagoons, and lower river stretches of the Grijalva and Usumacinta basins spanning southern Mexico and Guatemala. The name comes from its most reliable field mark: two prominent horizontal lines running between the eyes, which also distinguish it from the closely related and often confused Vieja synspilum. Beyond that, it's a genuinely colorful fish that tends to become surprisingly interactive once settled in, often responding to its keeper's approach with the kind of bold personality this group is known for. In the wild it grazes heavily on bottom detritus and plant material, and in captivity it will eat almost anything green it can get into its mouth. Aquarium plants included. Temperament is the central challenge here. Aggression varies considerably between individuals, and even a bonded pair can run into serious trouble if the male wants to spawn and the female doesn't. Keeping them in a large cichlid community sometimes actually helps diffuse tension, though success is never guaranteed. This is an intermediate-level species that rewards patient, attentive keepers who are willing to observe their fish closely, rearrange the tank when needed, and always have a divider on standby just in case.
