Vietnamese White Cloud Minnow
Tanichthys micagemmae
A lesser-known cousin of the white cloud that rewards keepers who look closely.

About
The Vietnamese White Cloud Minnow (Tanichthys micagemmae) is a small cyprinid from the Ben Hai River in northern Vietnam, where it inhabits wide, shallow stretches of fast-moving water over sandy substrate. It only entered the aquarium hobby in the early 2000s, arriving alongside the formal scientific description of the species, and it still flies somewhat under the radar compared to its popular relative, the common white cloud minnow. The two are easy to tell apart once you know what to look for: this species carries a broader, more prominent dark lateral stripe paired with a whitish one of roughly equal width, and its ventral and anal fins flush a warm reddish tone rather than yellow, which distinguishes it from yet another Vietnamese Tanichthys species circulating in the trade. It is a true schooling fish, and keeping a group of ten or more makes a real difference. Individuals settle in more readily, and males show their best coloration as they spar gently for female attention. Tankmates should be selected with care; other small, peaceful species like compact danios, tetras, or dwarf loaches work well, but anything boisterous or significantly larger is a poor match. Breeding follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of the group, and in a mature, well-planted setup, fry will often appear with minimal intervention from the keeper.
