The White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) is one of those species that almost every fishkeeper encounters early on, and for good reason. Originally collected from clean, slow-moving coastal streams in southern China in 1932. Discovered by a scout leader named Tan Kam Fei, whose name the genus honors. It is now thought to be extinct in its native habitat, surviving today almost entirely through captive breeding. Wild fish shared their streams with species like Paradise Fish and 'Puntius' semifasciolatus, and those make naturally good tankmates in an aquarium setting. The fish itself is a slender little cyprinid with a warm reddish-brown body, a lateral iridescent stripe, and red-tipped fins that flash nicely when males spar for female attention in a well-kept group. Keeping ten or more together brings out the best in them. Individuals are bolder, colors improve, and the whole group moves in that satisfying, cohesive way a proper school should. Several ornamental forms exist including long-finned, golden, and albino varieties. One honest caveat: heavy inbreeding on fish farms means commercially available stock can be genetically compromised, so sourcing from reputable breeders is worth the effort. On the whole, though, this is a genuinely forgiving species and an excellent choice for newer keepers.
