Wine Red Betta

A native of the blackwater peat swamp forests of Malaysia and Indonesia, Betta coccina, sometimes called the wine red betta, is the namesake of an entire group of closely related small bettas. Males are a deep, rich red with iridescent green spots on the median fins and a distinctive green lateral blotch, while females lack that blotch and tend toward duller coloration. This is a species that rewards patient, well-prepared keepers. The soft, highly acidic water of its natural habitat is not negotiable. This fish genuinely needs those conditions to thrive, which rules it out as a casual community tank addition. Tankmates, if any, should be chosen with care; small, unobtrusive cyprinids or loaches from similar environments can sometimes work, but many keepers find it simplest to maintain coccina alone or as a pair. Aggression toward conspecifics is unpredictable. Some groups coexist with minor squabbling while others see real damage, so watch carefully if you attempt a group setup. Breeding follows the typical osphronemid bubble-nest pattern, with the male taking over nest guarding once spawning is complete. Clutch sizes are modest, rarely exceeding fifty eggs. One practical note for breeders: the fry need access to warm, humid air above the water surface for proper labyrinth organ development, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.
