Juveniles drift with floating Sargassum mats in the western Atlantic, finding shelter and food among the tangled fronds before eventually settling onto deeper reef slopes, often well below typical sport-diving depths. Adults range from the Carolinas through the Gulf of Mexico down to the Lesser Antilles, where they can be among the more abundant fish on seaward reef faces. In the wild they feed heavily on crabs and sea urchins, and that predatory instinct carries straight into the aquarium. Crustaceans of any kind are firmly on the menu and should not be kept as tankmates. Temperamentally, this is a territorial fish, and it needs companions that can hold their own. That said, within the triggerfish family it sits on the more manageable end, and experienced reef and FOWLR keepers generally find it workable given appropriate company. Appearance-wise it carries the classic trigger body plan. Robust, compressed, with a strong beak and vivid markings.
