The hovering zebra loach (Yunnanilus cruciatus) is a miniature nemacheilid from Vietnam that breaks the mold of what most people expect from loaches. While its relatives tend to skulk under rocks and wood, this species regularly ventures into open water, hovering at mid-level and actively exploring the full water column. A behavior that makes it surprisingly visible and engaging in a well-set-up tank. Its body is relatively deep for such a small fish, marked with distinct vertical bars that give it the zebra nickname, and it carries a few subtle anatomical quirks around the lips and gill cover that separate it from lookalike species in related genera. Its taxonomic history has been genuinely contested, shuffled between Micronemacheilus and Yunnanilus by different researchers, and some authorities still consider it the sole member of its own genus. In the aquarium it's a peaceful fish but can easily be pushed aside by boisterous or larger tankmates, so pairing it with similarly scaled companions like Boraras, Microdevario, or small danios works well. It's highly social and really does need a group of eight or more to feel comfortable and behave naturally. Smaller numbers tend to produce shy, hidden fish. Younger individuals are bolder; older fish often grow more reclusive over time. An intermediate-level species, it rewards attentive care.
