The African Jewelfish (Hemichromis bimaculatus) is one of those fish that turns heads in any aquarium. A compact, intensely colored cichlid from the forested river basins and canal systems of West Africa, where it favors muddy and sandy substrates often linked to areas of forest cover. In its base coloration it already shows rich reds and iridescent speckles, but when a breeding pair locks in, the colors deepen to a level that's hard to believe. One useful identification note: this species carries three dark spots along the body, including one on the caudal peduncle, which separates it from the closely related Hemichromis lifalili, which shows only two. That distinction matters because the two are sometimes mixed up in the trade. Temperament-wise, this is a fish that earns its intermediate care rating honestly. It's territorial at the best of times and becomes seriously dangerous to tankmates when spawning. Removing other fish at that point is not optional. It works best as a dedicated pair in a species setup, though simply buying two adults rarely ends well, as the loser often gets killed. The recommended approach is to raise a small group of juveniles and let a natural pair form. Once bonded, pairs are typically lifelong. Not a good fit for a mixed community tank, despite sometimes being sold that way.
