Found along the reefs and rocky outcrops of Southern Africa, Alcyonium compactofestucum is a soft coral in the family Alcyoniidae. A group commonly known as finger or leather corals. The genus Alcyonium tends to produce fleshy, lobate colonies that rely on both zooxanthellae and direct feeding to meet their nutritional needs, and this species fits that general pattern. In the aquarium, it is considered a beginner-friendly choice, which is somewhat unusual for wild-collected soft corals, but reflects its tolerance for a reasonable range of conditions. It asks for moderate lighting and moderate water movement, nothing extreme in either direction, making it compatible with a wide variety of mixed reef setups without the need for highly specialized positioning. Like other alcyoniids, it will likely benefit from occasional target feeding with fine particulate foods, though it can draw significant energy from light as well. Because it comes from Southern African waters rather than the Indo-Pacific hotspots that supply most of the hobby's soft corals, it may carry slightly different temperature preferences than more commonly seen Alcyonium species, so it is worth researching the specific conditions of its native range before purchase. This is an accessible and legitimate reef tank option.
