Found across a broad sweep of South American river systems including the Amazon, Essequibo, and Paraguay basins, as well as Suriname, this bristlenose pleco, Ancistrus hoplogenys, is one of those solid, unfussy bottom-dwellers that earns its keep in a planted or community setup. It shares the characteristic bushy tentacles on the snout that make ancistrus species so recognizable, and grows to a manageable size that won't overwhelm a mid-sized aquarium. One genuinely interesting biological quirk is its capacity for air-breathing. It can supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric air, an adaptation that likely helps it cope with the low-oxygen, slow-moving, or seasonally variable waters it inhabits in the wild. Day to day it tends to stay out of sight, becoming more active after lights-out when it goes to work grazing surfaces and foraging along the substrate. Temperament is reliably peaceful, making it a good fit alongside most community fish. A diet heavy in plant matter, algae, vegetables, and quality sinking wafers, is important for long-term health. It sits in the intermediate care category mainly because it appreciates good water quality and a well-maintained tank rather than having any particularly demanding requirements.
