Starflower Coral (Astreopora explanata) is a hermatypic, reef-building species native to the tropical Western Pacific, where it grows in association with natural reef structures. Like other members of the Astreopora genus, it develops a relatively flat, encrusting growth form studded with small, evenly spaced corallites that give the colony its characteristic starlike surface texture. Hence the common name. The individual polyps are modest in size but create a pleasing, almost geometric pattern across the colony face when viewed closely. In the aquarium, this coral demands conditions that closely mirror its wild habitat: intense lighting and vigorous, consistent water movement are both non-negotiable. It is not a species that tolerates neglect or instability in water quality, and it is best suited to experienced reefers who already have a handle on maintaining a mature, well-established system. Source data on its specific aquarium behavior is limited, so much of what keepers learn about it comes from hands-on experience rather than an extensive hobbyist track record.
