The Sinuous Cup Coral (Australophyllia wilsoni) is something of an oddity in the reef hobby. It hails from subtropical and temperate waters along the southern coast of Australia and into the southwest Pacific, rather than the warm tropical reefs most corals call home. In the wild it grows from the surface down to around 30 meters, anchoring itself to hard substrate across a geographic range that pushes well into cooler latitudes. That cooler-water origin is central to understanding this coral: it is adapted to conditions that would stress many of the tropical LPS corals more commonly kept in home aquariums. The cup-shaped corallite structure gives it a distinctive look, with a sinuous, folded form that sets it apart from rounder brain corals or the branching shapes of more familiar species. In the aquarium it does not demand intense lighting, and lower flow suits it well, making tank placement relatively straightforward. For hobbyists interested in temperate or species-only reef setups, this coral is a genuinely interesting choice.
