The banded jewel cichlid (Hemichromis elongatus) is one of those fish that earns its reputation the hard way. Through sheer ferocity. Native to the coastal river systems of Lower Guinea, from Cameroon south through Gabon and into the Republic of Congo, it occupies shallow streams and lakes where it operates as a highly efficient predator. Anything that fits in its mouth is a meal, and anything that doesn't is still likely to get roughed up. In parts of its native range, local fisheries actually use it deliberately to knock back tilapia populations, which tells you a lot about what this fish is capable of. The common name comes from the row of five dark lateral blotches running along the flanks, which contrast against the jewel-like iridescent spotting typical of Hemichromis. Despite being listed as beginner-level in care terms, that rating only really applies to water quality tolerance. Its aggression level is anything but beginner-friendly. A species-only setup is almost always the right call. Pairs bond for life and make devoted, formidable parents, guarding eggs and fry with the same intensity they bring to everything else. Getting a pair means starting with a group of juveniles and letting nature sort it out, then removing the extras quickly before the newly formed pair does it for you.
