The spanner barb (Barbodes lateristriga) is a sizeable, energetic fish from the rivers and rocky mountain streams of the Malay Peninsula and Borneo, where it's often found in clear, fast-moving water near waterfalls and boulder-strewn substrates. Its common name comes from the lateral markings that can resemble a spanner or T-shape, and the pattern itself is variable enough across different regional populations that researchers have identified at least six distinct forms from Peninsular Malaysia alone. The fish most frequently sold in the hobby traces back to populations from Johor in the south. In the aquarium this species is confident and active, and its size alone can unsettle smaller or more timid tankmates, particularly around food. Pairing it with other robust fish, larger danios, devarios, garra, or appropriate loaches, tends to work well. Groups of six or more are generally recommended to spread any social tension, though individual behavior can vary and mixed reports exist from keepers. Juveniles naturally school together in the wild, while adult males lean toward a more solitary, territorial approach. Given a generous setup with good water movement to mimic its natural habitat, this species is manageable even for less experienced keepers willing to do their homework on compatible tankmates.
