Queen Angelfish

The queen angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) is one of the most visually arresting fish in the Western Atlantic, ranging from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico south to Brazil, with an additional population at St. Paul's Rocks in the eastern Atlantic. Adults develop a brilliant mosaic of blue, yellow, and orange scaling, topped by the distinctive speckled crown marking that separates this species from its close relative the blue angelfish. In the wild, individuals glide alone or in pairs through coral reef structures, weaving around seafans, seawhips, and hard corals with an unhurried confidence. Their diet is heavily weighted toward sponges, supplemented by algae, tunicates, hydroids, and bryozoans. A feeding profile that makes them genuinely difficult to sustain long-term in captivity without a varied, sponge-enriched diet. Juveniles are a different story in terms of temperament: smaller individuals are relatively peaceful and will even clean ectoparasites off other fish, a behavior that fades as they grow. That growth brings increasing aggression and territoriality, and adults can make life difficult for tankmates. This is a species that rewards patient, experienced keepers who can commit to the substantial space and dietary attention it genuinely requires.
