The rock beauty (Holacanthus tricolor) is one of the more recognizable angels from the Western Atlantic, ranging from the waters off Georgia and Bermuda down through the Gulf of Mexico and all the way to southern Brazil. Adults are hard to miss. The front third and tail of the body are vivid yellow, while the rest is deep black, making for a sharp two-tone look that's unlike most other angels in the trade. Juveniles look completely different, showing mostly yellow with a small blue-ringed black spot that gradually expands as the fish matures. In the wild, rock beauties favor rocky reefs, jetties, and coral-rich zones, and young fish are often found hanging around fire corals. Their natural diet leans heavily on sponges and tunicates, which makes them a challenge to convert to prepared aquarium foods. This is probably the biggest hurdle for keeping them long-term, and it's worth researching before purchase. Behaviorally, they're semi-aggressive and can get territorial, particularly toward other angelfish, so tankmate selection matters. They grow into substantial fish and need a roomy setup to thrive. Despite the listed beginner care level, the dietary conversion issue means they reward patient and attentive keepers.
