Flameback Angelfish

The flameback angelfish (Centropyge aurantonotus) is one of the few dwarf angels native to the Atlantic rather than the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the southern Caribbean down to the coast of São Paulo, Brazil. In the wild it tends to stick close to isolated patches of staghorn coral, grazing on algae and sponges among the reef structure. A habit that translates well to aquarium life, where it will spend most of its time picking at rock surfaces. Visually, it's hard to mistake: a deep blue-to-purple body topped with a vivid orange-yellow mantle across the back and head, making it one of the more distinctive small angels available to saltwater keepers. At under three inches as an adult, it fits comfortably into systems that couldn't house a larger angel species. Care is considered accessible even for relatively new marine hobbyists, which is a bit unusual for the angelfish family. That said, it carries the typical semi-aggressive streak of the genus and can hassle smaller or more passive tankmates, so some thought around stocking order and tank layout is worth the effort. Given good conditions it can live close to a decade, making it a solid long-term resident for a well-run reef or fish-only setup.
