The blue-eye cichlid (Cryptoheros spilurus) is a smaller cichlid from the Atlantic-draining rivers and lakes of Central America, ranging from Belize down through Nicaragua. In the wild it gravitates toward shallower, calmer stretches of water, the slower lower valleys of river systems, where it can be found over sand, mud, and rocky substrate alike. It's a versatile fish in terms of habitat, but in the aquarium its personality is what really defines the experience of keeping it. Like many cichlids in this group, it forms a powerful pair bond, and once a male and female lock in, they become a real unit. Coordinated, territorial, and not shy about defending their space from tankmates. That aggression is worth taking seriously when planning a community setup. A 45-gallon minimum gives a pair some breathing room, but tankmates should be chosen carefully, ideally other fish robust enough to hold their own. The blue-eye is an omnivore and not a demanding feeder, accepting a wide range of prepared and live foods. It's not the right fish for a peaceful community, but for someone who wants an engaging, interactive cichlid with genuine character, it delivers in a relatively manageable package.
