The Calypso Tetra (Hyphessobrycon axelrodi) is a small but interesting characin from Trinidad, where it inhabits low-elevation clear to slightly murky waters, often along the margins of swamps. What sets this species apart from most tetras is its tolerance for brackish conditions, something you rarely see in the family, which reflects the coastal, transitional habitats it naturally calls home. Adults stay quite small, topping out well under an inch in aquarium settings, so they work well in modest-sized tanks as long as those are properly planted and maintained. Being listed as intermediate care reflects the somewhat specific water chemistry this fish prefers, leaning toward soft and acidic conditions that mirror its native habitat. It's not a fish you'd hand off to a complete beginner without some guidance, but it's far from demanding for anyone with a bit of experience managing water parameters. Like most tetras, it will almost certainly do better in a group than kept solo or in pairs. Schooling behavior is central to how these fish navigate their environment and manage stress. Its reported lifespan of up to a decade is impressive for a fish this size, and speaks well of what good husbandry can deliver.
